Eros, Psyche, Cinnabar, Cupid’s Kiss and Aphrodite’s Revenge

Here's the story of Eros and Psyche.....

The mortal Psyche was the youngest and most gorgeous of three princesses. Men came from afar to gaze upon her beauty. They believed that she was even more beautiful than Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty.  This upset Aphrodite, so she told her son, Eros, to shoot Psyche with an arrow so that she may fall in love with something hideous. But when Eros approached Psyche to do his mother’s bidding, he instead scratches himself with his own dart, which makes any living thing fall in love with the first thing it sees. He was struck speechless by her beauty. Consequently, he falls deeply in love with Psyche and disobeys his mother's order.

Psyche’s father is worried that Psyche has yet to find love.  He suspects that they have incurred the wrath of the gods and consulted the oracle of Apollo to see who his daughter would marry. Eros consulted with Apollo and had the oracle to tell the father that Psyche was to become the wife of a terrible dragon.

Psyche is arrayed in funeral attire and deposited in a lovely meadow where she promptly falls asleep. When she awoke she found herself near a beautiful mansion. Voices told her to go inside where she bathed and ate delicious food. After she went to bed, her monstrous new husband joined her. And to Psyche’s surprise, he was a tender lover. She couldn’t see him, but his voice was kind. He was not like a dragon at all and Psyche grew to love him. Each day ended happily in his embrace, though she never saw his face.

Psyche’s sisters grew jealous of her happiness. They told her that she should fear her mysterious husband. Maybe he was a dragon in disguise. So the next night she brought a lamp and knife to bed with her intending to find out who her husband was. After he came to her that night speaking words of love, he fell asleep. She used the lamp to look at his face. To her surprise he was the most handsome man she had ever seen. She gasped, ashamed at her lack of trust accidentally spilled hot oil on his shoulder. He awoke and fled. He went to his mother, Aphrodite for her to tend to his burn.

Psyche learned the truth about her husband. She knew that it was Eros, the god of love. She began searching the world for him. She sought Aphrodite’s help not realizing that the jealous goddess had been causing problems from the beginning. Aphrodite had locked up the injured Eros. She told Psyche to complete a series of trials in hopes that it would make Psyches beauty fade.

In the first trial, Psyche had to sort a pile of grain into separate heaps of barley, oats and wheat by sunset. At first, she despaired, but the ants helped her to finish the task.

In the second trial, Psyche had to cross a river and gather wool from fierce sheep. Again, she despaired, but the reeds along the riverbank captured the sheep’s wool when they came to drink, enabling her to gather it.

In the third trial, she had to collect water from the river Styx’s source in a crystal bottle. The rocks were slippery and dangerous, but an eagle sent by Zeus snatched up her bottle and returned to her full.

Finally for the fourth task, Aphrodite sent Psyche to the underworld telling her to fill a box with a sample of Persephone’s beauty. Apparently the goddess had wasted so much of her beauty tending to her injured son that she needed some of Persephone’s. Psyche once again despaired, but after a series of adventures the exhausted mortal arrived in the realm of the dead where the queen of the underworld agreed to place some of her beauty in the box.

As Psyche returned to Aphrodite’s temple, the burden of the quests weighed heavily upon her. Her beauty had indeed begun to fade. In a moment of weakness, she opened the box, hoping she might use some of Persephone’s beauty to restore her spirits. But it turned out that the box contained not beauty but the sleep of the dead and Psyche collapsed to the ground.

Luckily by this time, Eros had headed and escaped from his mother’s captivity. He found Psyche and with a kiss, woke her from the enchanted sleep. Psyche delivered the box to Aphrodite who at last relented. Eros asked Zeus to make Psyche immortal. They were married and lived happily ever after.

Care of your hand knit garments

Please hand wash cold or lukewarm water and lay flat to dry. Even though this yarn does contain super wash merino, I do always recommend that you hand wash your knitwear. We use colorfast acid dyes for dying our yarn, and rinse until water runs clear. There may be a chance that some dye may bleed slightly in the first wash of your finished item. This does sometimes happen for speckled yarn and stubborn colors that are prone to bleed. For the first couple of washes, hand wash separately to be sure that no further bleeding.

There are no dye lots. We always try to sell from same dye lots but if not sure, we recommend blending the skeins as you work. Color saturation can differ from different dyelots.

The colors are great and they are soft. I don't have a specific project right now so they won't be stashed for long.
